OLSP12-01 - New York State Common Core Learning Standards in ELA and Literacy

The Common Core Learning Standards in ELA and Literacy During this online course, participants will explore the Common Core Learning Standards document, and secondary materials that support an understanding of the document. In addition, participants will study the six shifts encouraged by the standards and examine methods of applying both the standards and the shifts to their own classrooms. They will receive feedback from fellow teachers as well as the facilitator.
OLSP12-02 - Beyond the Basics of Response to Intervention

If you have heard about response to intervention at a conference or faculty meeting and walked away at the end with more questions than answers, this course is for you! We will look at key resources for RtI information and discuss the questions that arise. We will explore the accepted practices for universal screening, tiered interventions, progress monitoring and how they impact the school staff. There will be opportunities in the assignments for individuals to explore different areas of interest within the structure of response to intervention.
OLSP12-03 - Recognizing Early-Onset Mental Health Disorders in Children

As educators and parents we are often, by default, among the first people to notice that a child may be experiencing problems. Completion of this course results in a basic understanding of warning signs of early-onset mental illness in children and adolescents which is useful to professional teaching and learning as it strengthens teacher-parent communications. OLSP12-04 - Introduction to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Occasionally, we need to accommodate and teach students in our classrooms who have been diagnosed and maybe undergoing treatment. What can we expect? Will they hurt others? How do we keep the rest of the students safe? Learn the answers to all of these questions and many more in this course. Learn about a number of specific conditions including ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Depression, and Bipolar Disorder. A teacher's sensitivity to issues and understanding can make a world of difference to a child, the classroom and family.
OLSP12-05 - Cognitive Skills - Understanding Learning Challenges

The U.S. Department of Education, and others indicate that weak cognitive skills are the source of over 80% of learning problems. In this course you’ll come to understand the answer: students approach each task with varying learning tools. These tools are called cognitive skills, and these skills determine the quality, speed, and ease with which individuals learn and perform. This course provides methods for detecting students with weak cognitive skills and tools to strengthen those skills. Teachers will receive understanding, as well as ways to apply development techniques in the classroom. The online class is fun and interactive and includes information about new brain research and how it can impact today’s classrooms.
OLSP12-06 - Common Core State Standards in Math Grades 3-8

Dr. Tim Kanold and Dr. Diane Briars use Professional Learning Communities to delve deeply into the Common Core State Standards in mathematics. Working with small groups of 3rd through 8th grade teachers, they demonstrate how to create rigorous curriculum units, develop high-impact instructional strategies, create common assessments, as well as build informal progress monitoring checks. In turn, this course offers views into classrooms where teachers of grades four and eight teach standards-based lessons and discuss their learning paths to implementation. As a result, all teachers of grades 3-8 will understand what the CCSS offer around the teaching of mathematics and how to implement them.
OLSP12-07 - Charlotte Danielson’s A Framework for Teaching – Making the Most of Teacher Evaluation

Charlotte Danielson's A Framework for Teaching defines teachers responsibilities, which fall into four domains: planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities. Through lectures, classroom observations, and vigorous panel discussions, educators work through how to use the Framework to scrutinize and strengthen classroom teaching practices to improve student learning. Punctuated by worksheets and activities, the course prepares educators to use the Framework to become their best professional selves.
OLSP12-08 - Data-Driven Decision Making: Implementing Strategies for Student Achievement

Educators learn how to make data-driven decisions using classroom data to inform their instructional practice. By capturing and analyzing student data in the form of graphs, charts, and diagrams, educators learn to adapt and focus their instructional strategies to achieve greater student academic achievement. Educators also learn how students can achieve more success in less time.
