The Annual Early Literacy Institute responds to the need for research-based information on how to successfully construct a strong early literacy program. The Institute combines current research, practice and skills development, with demonstrations of concrete evidence-based methods and resources to enable practitioners to approach the coming school year with new knowledge and strategies.

Structuring Classrooms to Support Literacy

Using Nursery Rhymes to Support Language and Literacy Development

Certificates of Attendance will be issued to all attendees confirming participation in 6 hours of professional development per day, applicable, with your District’s approval, towards NYSED mandated hours.

The Respectful Classroom

How would you characterize behavior in your classroom? How could your classroom learning environment be different if you could foster a culture of dignity and respect? Learn how to facilitate Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies to increase student academic achievement and positive behavior in your classroom. Create a school community with lasting partnerships to increase student learning time and educational success. Study data driven research and an evidence based approach that will effectively support decision making, social competence and successful academic outcomes in your classroom. Educators will study a wide variety of models that will benefit their classroom instruction. The focus of the course will be to create a proactive plan that will work for you. If there is not respect, learning will not rise to its fullest potential. Teach your students pro-social skills and behaviors that encourage integrity and accountability for life. This course is appropriate for all educators grades P-12 including: ELA, Mathematics, S.S., Science, Physical Education. PATCH Summer Institute
Registration is now open for the LYC/ Project PATCH Summer Institute, “Dignity for All Students through Law-Related Education,” at Long Island’s Northport High School. The four-day, June 25-28, professional development opportunity for educators of grades K-12 is only $40 per person.
The Institute offers 5 separate strands.
Select the one that best meets your training needs: 1) Character Education and Peer Leadership; 2) Global Issues - International Law and Human Rights; 3) Court and the Classroom II; 4) Criminal Justice for Educators; and 5) Forensics Science.

Common Core Learning Standards for ELA K-5 Teachers
In this 15-hour professional development opportunity, participants will explore the instructional shifts of the Common Core Learning Standards for K-5 ELA, and learn how to adjust their instruction towards the shifts. Resources and best instructional practices appropriate to participants' individual grade level and subject will be explored, and connections will be made between grade levels and subjects in K-5 ELA.

Technology Integration Workshops
This 15 hour professional development opportunity will introduce you to a multitude of online resources. Each session, new and exciting resources will be explored. Our purpose is to spark your creativity and assist you in updating and enhancing some aspect of your practice, from a new form of assessment to an existing lesson or unit of instruction. The workshops are independent of one another, so you may opt to register for one session, any or all of them. You will be recommended for credit for the hours that you attend.

Creating Smart Board Lessons Aligned with CCLS in Mathematics
This 45 hour professional development opportunity is designed for teachers who wish to enhance their mathematics instruction using the Smart Board while aligning their lessons/units with the Common Core Learning Standards in Mathematics. Participants will receive an overview of the standards and Smart Board technology, and will use that knowledge to create 5 lessons that link the standards and the technology.
This is a hybrid course which requires a 15 hour practicum of research and lesson development outside of classroom hours. An Internet connection is required.
